In the forest with the bats

A tree frog with orange feet holds to a bare twig in the dark.
Dusk in the forest stream, the team small beneath the footbridge.
Rigging a net pole as the light fades.
Three researchers at the mist-net pole as evening comes on.
Headlamps on: the net is gathered in over the stream.
Working the net under headlamp flare.
Headlamps scattered along the stream where the nets are strung.
A single headlamp on the plank footbridge, the forest black around it.
Gloved hands ease a bat out of the net and into a cloth.
Held upright on the cloth, the bat shows its teeth.
A bat looks out from its cloth, cradled in purple gloves.
By red headlamp, a bat wrapped in cloth passes between two researchers.

The canal

Arriving over the bay, a long bridge and the green coast below the wing.
A cargo ship and its tugs slide past the rail line on the bank.
A car carrier moves past behind the palms.
From the cabin of a small boat, the jungle bank through the open door.
Dugout boats pulled up on the lake shore under a sky of cloud.
In the wheelhouse, the chart plotter glows and the cargo ships pass the windows.
A broad, still lake holding the clouds and the green hills.
A dock lamp doubled in the black water at night.
The bay and the city skyline from beneath a museum canopy.

Field days and nights

A crocodile basks open-mouthed on the mud.
Under a flowering arbour, pack on, ready for the field.
Two tree frogs with orange feet on bamboo, caught in the torch beam.
Roots running across grass carpeted in fallen red petals.
A tiny frog clings to a palm stalk as the light finds it.
Looking up through the hanging roots of a great fig into the canopy.
Padlocks crowd a railing, the skyline hazy across the bay.
A gilded altar at the end of a white nave.
Headlamp flare over the mist net, then hands at work in the mesh.
Setting the net poles in the stream before dark.
Torchlight at the mouth of the culvert where the bats roost.
A bat's wing spread open between gloved fingers under the lamp.
Wrapped in cloth, then let go into the dark.
A small dark bat peers out of a striped cloth.
Ridge after green ridge falling to a hazy gulf under heavy cloud.
